The relationship between CH4 fluxes and VHEF magnitudes is not linear; substantial VHEFs introduce oxygen into riverbed sediments, hindering CH4 production and promoting oxidation, while minimal VHEFs lead to a temporary decrease in CH4 flux, relative to its production, due to reduced advective transport.
